JOEY TOOGOOD

Written Works
My self portrait series, "Spectrum: The Search For Self", is a study on my identity. Each series of images is supported by text, used to describe the images. The visual project reflects my relationship with the self by mirroring different aspects of myself. Because this series is unique to my experiences and my perceptions of myself, I find it difficult to translate my intentions and the emotions I experienced during this project; the supporting texts- or poems- describe what I am attempting to convey through each costume.

Dreaming Dress
Loving is feminine,
Soft and blooming.
We dance in fields
and empty rooms,
Naive and sweet.
We are girly
I am dreaming.

Brazen Bint
Bleeding is uncharted
Flowing and discharged
To accept one’s own utopia,
becomes a war on boundaries.
Bound less by shame
I am rivers,
Periods of change.

Madame Mother
Woman is poise,
Elegance and respect.
Her soul resides within the soil
and takes possession of the living,
Luring and unforgiving.
She is sex,
Strange and unusual.

Earth's Eye
Eyes as windows,
Weathered and familiar.
Gateways to the soul,
and betrayer of the heart,
Queer and natural.
They are earthy,
Tender and filthy.

Building Bodies
Masculine is muscle,
angry and daring.
Natural in ego,
and confident (in theory).
Luring and unforgiving.
I am charming,
Ambitious and assertive.

Freedom Fantasy
Freedom is fantasy,
Wild and false.
We are locked in movement
Vulnerable in spirit,
Opening and closing.
I am dizzy,
Healing and restless

Devalued Dominance
Avoiding is concealing,
Dominant and careless.
I am defending my space,
Devaluing my body.
Scruffy and unkempt.
I am slouched
Insecure and unbothered.
