JOEY TOOGOOD

"For the grandmothers, the levelers, the dreamers, the men who get it, the young women who keep going, the older ones who opened the way, the conversations that don't end, and a world that will let [Her] bloom to her fullest"
- Men Explain Things To Me

"I am deeply interested in the three archetypes of the woman: The Sexual Object, The Mother, and The Unknown (or No Man’s Land). Every woman is likely to experience one or more of these roles throughout her life. My work explores these outcomes, examining the influence of sexuality and sensuality in my personal experiences, the complexities of motherhood and childbirth, and the evolving possibilities of being a queer modern woman, where one's survival is not dependent on the presence of a man."

About The Artist
Joey Toogood is a self-representational artist and photographer based in Wimbledon Art Studios, London, graduating with a BA in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, in 2022.
Taking inspiration from personal stories and feminism, Toogood explores her experiences as a queer woman artist. Toogood views art as more than just a matter of skill or passion; it's an addiction that surpasses all addictions. It replaces absence and restores the self. Toogood's art reveals parts of herself that are hidden, even from her. It's not a question of wanting, but needing to create. The artist's identity and sense of self is inseparable from her work. Toogood's work permits her to begin again, re-imagining a future of self liberation.
